Anil Agarwal’s story is closely linked to ambition, hard work and risk taking. With only a few dollars, he took his entrepreneurial journey in 1976, but had a clear vision on where he wanted to go with his business. That early start turned into a worldwide enterprise, with operations in a number of the world’s large natural-resource industries.

His legacy in the business world today covers oil and gas, zinc, silver, aluminium, copper, iron ore, steel and power. The growth in these businesses and locations was instrumental in a small trading business becoming a large global provider in the natural resources business.

Starting Small and Thinking Bigger

Whereas entrepreneurs start with an inherited business empire, Agarwal started with limited resources. His distinctive approach was his ability to steadily grow beyond the scope of his first business endeavor.

With business expansion, he entered new industries and new markets and succeeded in creating a diversified business. This trajectory marked a key chapter in his entrepreneurial journey and ultimately led him into the ranks of India’s business giants.

This is one of the reasons why Agarwal’s name has been trending around whenever someone mentions a Top Indian Businessman. His career is a testament to the growth of a small-scale business and its continuous expansion and bold decisions.

Taking an Unconventional Route

A chapter that was especially significant was the year 2003.

Agarwal has taken the first step towards becoming the first Indian company to go public on the London Stock Exchange. His reasons for making the decision were that he believed that Indian businesses were not being valued and recognized around the world as they should be.

He didn’t just aim at the domestic market; he went to London and sought an international listing. It was not a normal decision and was both a financial and strategic risk.

The shift eventually proved to be a turning point for Vedanta. Most crucially, it was an example of Agarwal’s willingness to go against the conventional grain when it was the right move for his grander plan.

This way of doing business has also helped him get in the fray of the Top 10 Indian Industrialist discussion.

When Business Meets Social Responsibility

Agarwal’s story doesn’t end there. One of his key learnings along the way is that businesses should play their part in society.

His investments in India’s metals and mining industry have been directed towards making this country more independent. At the same time, his focus has extended towards supporting smaller businesses.

One such approach is this Vedanta Saathi programme. The purpose of the programme is to provide tools and services to MSMEs to help them grow and generate employment opportunities.

Supporting Communities Through Nand Ghar

However, the concept of social vision is also present in Agarwal’s Nand Ghar initiative. The programme reflects various aspects of community development such as early childhood education, health, nutrition and empowerment of women in rural areas.

In the last five years, Nand Ghar has been able to reach many families. The vision of the initiative is to reach more children and women in underserved community.

These works are done through the Anil Agarwal Foundation which focuses on areas of healthcare, nutrition, women and child development, animal welfare, grassroots sports and fighting hunger.

The core of this strategy is a very basic principle: “No one should be forced to go to bed hungry.

A Story of Ambition and Purpose

The expansion of an business is just not the story of Anil Agarwal. It started in 1976 with a small amount of resources and grew over the years due to business expansion, decision making and risk taking in geographical expansion.

One of the highlights of his journey was his listing on the London Stock Exchange in 2003, which marked his bold step towards global recognition.

Concurrently, his efforts through various business initiatives like Vedanta Saathi and Nand Ghar demonstrate his conviction that business can also bring a change in the scenario and provide opportunities to the communities.

Whether it was a small trading post or grown into a global business, Agarwal’s journey is one of ambition, risk-taking, perseverance and a broader sense of purpose.
