After winning the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 title on Sunday, the Smriti Mandhana-led Royal Challengers Bangalore experienced their first taste of franchise cricket success. Mandhana’s women’s team made history with RCB‘s triumph over the Delhi Capitals, but the men’s club hasn’t won an IPL championship in their 16 years of competition. Rajasthan Royals posted a meme that went viral on the internet as supporters celebrated rcb women team victory on social media.
The winning teams
Delhi Capital came in second with Rs 3 crore in prize money, while Royal Challengers Bangalore took home Rs 6 crore.
What was the winning amount for the orange cap?
Ellyse Perry of the rcb women team took home the orange crown for her 347 runs in nine games. With an average of 69.40, the Australian batsman concluded with two fifty-score innings. She received a payment of Rs 5 lakh for her exceptional batting performance.
What about the purple cap?
With 13 dismissals to her name, Shreyanka Patil of the victorious RCB took home the purple hat as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker. She received a Rs 5 lakh award.
The Delhi Capitals finished second on the WPL 2024 points table with 10 points, whereas the defending champion Mumbai Indians had accumulated 12 points in 8 games during the league season. Prior to the playoffs, the victors, RCB, finished third in the overall league standings. Before defeating DC in the championship game, RCB had defeated MI in the playoffs.
After their women’s team won its first WPL title, the RCB men’s team also took to social media. Virat Kohli made a video call to congratulate the team. The ‘Superwomen’ of RCB were also praised by him in an Instagram story.
A victory to remember
No RCB bowler was in the top five wicket takers of the season going into Sunday’s final, which included three DC bowlers, top-ranked by Marizanne Kapp of South Africa (11 wickets). By the time the DC innings ended prematurely, Asha Shobhana, Sophie Molineux, and Shreyanka Patil of the RCB had all swiftly surpassed Kapp’s score.
With a combined haul of 46/9 in 11 overs, the three spinners broke the back of DC batting and virtually ensured that RCB would go down in history at the halfway point of the match.
Shafali Verma opened the innings with a normally courageous 27-ball 44, which helped DC get off to a flying start. Using the field constraints to her full advantage, the aggressive 20-year-old lived up to her reputation on the big night, hitting Renuka Singh, Perry, and Molineux for six apiece inside the powerplay.
In a stunning display of skill and determination, the RCB Women’s team emerged victorious, clinching the match with a remarkable performance. Their triumph is a testament to their hard work and teamwork, inspiring fans worldwide.
