The CEO of Zerodha, Nithin Kamath, revealed on Monday that he had a “mild stroke” six weeks earlier. He blamed a number of things for the stroke, such as his father’s recent death, sleep issues, fatigue, dehydration, and overindulgence in physical activity. The fitness enthusiast Kamath, 44, made a revelation that has sparked a new discussion regarding work-life balance.

Kamath observed signs like drooping facial muscles and trouble writing and reading. He anticipates recovering completely in three to six months. After the mild stroke, Nithin Kamath said he was curious as to “why a person who’s fit and takes care of himself could be affected”. The co-founder of Zerodha stated that his physician advised him to be aware of when to “shift the gears down a bit.”

Dr. Sudhir Kumar, a neurologist in Hyderabad, noted that Nithin Kamath is among the “fittest people” and that the founder of Zerodha has correctly identified five potential risk factors that could have contributed to his stroke: Stress (from losing his father), lack of sleep, excessive exercise, tiredness from workouts and work commitments, and dehydration.

His recommendations: “So, it is important to exercise in moderation (and not over-exercise), ensure adequate sleep and cut down on work (if one is over-working),” His previous tweets about heart health have received notice since Zerodha’s cofounder revealed that she had a mild stroke.

Nithin Kamath made note of the “terrifying number of people having severe heart issues in my extended circle” in those 2021 tweets. Lack of sleep seems to be a common theme, and the significance of sleep for general health and wellbeing is not discussed nearly enough. The issue has gotten worse since WFH and COVID.”

“If you, like me, have trouble sleeping because of constant work distractions, triggers from email, news apps, social media, and chats, disconnecting completely a few hours before sleep helps significantly,” he stated. Recently, cardiologist Dr. Deepak Krishnamurthy of Bengaluru’s Kauvery Hospital made a comment regarding Kamath’s tweets regarding heart health.

“Many people got upset with me and called me derogatory names when I spoke out against the 72-hour work week a while back. Nonetheless, the necessity of a work-life balance cannot be overlooked. Time must be set aside for rest, relaxation, and sleep. You need spare time for all of that,” he suggested. He additionally stated: “Excess leading to health issues and cardiovascular events is known even before covid times.”

In a different X post, another cardiologist, Dr. Divij Khetan, stated: “Healthy and fit are not the same things. A person can have a heart attack even after running for miles.” Peers like Ashneer Grover, the former MD of BharatPe, sent encouraging messages to Kamath, who co-founded Zerodha with his brother Nikhil Kamath, advising him to “take care and take a break.”

“Avoid following arbitrary “influencers”

Nithin Kamath, the CEO of Zerodha, suffered a minor stroke. A doctor at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai advised Kamath not to follow medical advice from unreliable influencers. Dr. CS Pramesh voiced his concerns on X (formerly Twitter) following a social media influencer’s disapproval of medical advice that was shared for Mr. Kamath on social media. As he shared the guidelines, Dr. Pramesh underlined the risks of depending solely on social media for medical advice and advised against adhering to influencers who don’t have solid scientific evidence supporting their claims beyond their own.
